Driving in like they belong here

An unknown number of men in a dark grey sedan attempted to break into our property. We have two sliding gates facing the road, one is operated by an electric gate opener, the other is manually operated and padlocked.
One man exited the vehicle and somehow opened the padlock. We presume bolt cutters or another lock breaking tool were used, the lock has not been found, so we cannot verify this.
We detected their intrusion when the man who had exited the vehicle started opening the gate. Because the gate is seldom used, opening it causes some mechanical noise. I head a noise and looked out the window, at the same time, our dogs started barking and running outside.
I activated the alarm by remote control and went downstairs to try and call the dogs in, as I did not want them escaping on to the road. Once the dogs were safely locked inside, I proceeded out. The intruders had attempted to close the gate behind them and fled. The gate was still slightly open.
At that point, the armed response unit arrived and I accompanied a reaction officer around our property to check that no intruders remained and that no other locks or access points were compromised.
