On 16th March 2018 I was trying to apply for a loan to consolidate my debts. To settle them and then pay one smaller, more affordable payment. But I was already in arrears and no one would give me a loan.
So I found an advert on Gumtree from a man called Don Martins, claiming to have worked in the financial industry for 20 years and had now opened his own business, called Optimax finance, specialising in loans, business, home and car financing.
So I emailed him on firstname.lastname@example.org and he said he could help me but needed my bank statments, payslip and ID, which all seemed above board.
He then said he could secure a loan for me, but needed R2500 up front for admin fees. He sounded very viable and had a reasonable explanation for everything. Even when I asked him outright if it was a scam. And his reply was "No he would never do such a thing". He told me that he would like repeat business and was only there to help people in desperate situations.
So I paid it. He then told me that the loan had been processed and would appear in my bank account the next day. Which it did not. I then contacted him again and he said that he had phoned the call centre and the loan would be in my account the following day.
The next day, there was nothing reflecting and I tried to phone him and his phone was off. I then phoned the institution that the loan was supposed to be through, and there was nothing on their records.
I am not a stupid person, but he gave me hope that he could help me out of my financial situation and I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Dont be caught, like I did, by people that prey on the desperation of others.
