Ive posted my car for sale (Dodge Journey) on gumtree in December 2014. On the 11/01/2015 I had a call from a guy called Daniel (073 190 7823) wanting to know if the car is still available and if he can buy the car.  He told me that he is a truck driver working for De Beers Diamonds in Namibia and and that he is a Cash buyer.  He told me that he only speaks Afrikaans and that he doesn't understand english. For the next 4 days there was phone calls between us and he was telling me that he is waiting for the cash to be released by FNB South Africa but that I must meet him in Woodstock the morning of the 15/01/2015 so that we can go to the bank and do the transfer into my account and then we will go to the police station to sign a contract to state that he has paid for the car and that the car now belongs to him.  He was not able to take the car immediately as he had to take a truck back to Namibia and asked if I can keep the car for 2 weeks and then he will fly down to Cape Town and come and collect the car.  I met with him on the 15/01/2015 and he looked at the car and said everything looks good but that there has been a new rule at the bank and they couldn't release the funds but that he's got another plan.  He told me that he handed in some diamonds at a jeweller in the V&A Waterfront and that she will give him cash for the diamonds if I can take him there. He phoned her and she said that she is at the Canal Walk branch and that we must meet her there.  She told us the store is under renovations and that she doesn't want to do business in the store.  We were told to park at Entrance 11 and she asked what car I'm driving and she will meet us there. We met a White Jewish (looking) woman in the car lot and she got into my car.  She told 'Daniel' what they (her dad) are prepared to pay for the diamonds and there was some disagreement about the possible value of the diamonds.  'Daniel' then asked me to please take him to the 'actual' diamond owners to discuss alternate value.  They were Angolan's.  This all happened so quickly and was so convincing.  We met with the two Angolans in Woodstock (they got into my car) and negotiations started between them and 'Daniel'.  They wanted proof that Daniel was going to return with the cash as soon as the deal was made. Somehow I was talked into an offer (on Daniels behalf) to support the deal by offering cash as collateral to tie the deal over until 'Daniel' and I return from Canal Walk.  At this point I thought that if I help 'Daniel' close the deal with the jeweller, then he would be able to pay for the car cash.  All 3 of them then accompanied me to the bank (Nedbank Foreshore).  The one Angolan (Pablo) came with me into the bank while 'Daniel' and the father waited in the car. An undisclosed amount of money was drawn from my personal account. On the way back to Woodstock the theatrics began about who would return to Canal Walk and all of a sudden the Angolans needed more proof that Daniel would return with the balance agreed for the diamonds. Daniel then gave them R10,000.00 to proof his worth to the two Angolans.  This was not enough and things got a little bit heated.  I then stupidly agreed to leave 'Daniel' with the two Angolans and meet with the jeweller at Canal Walk and then return with the rest of the full value as requested.  At this point, 'Daniel' was in tears begging me to please return with the cash and not to disappear with the diamonds.I got to Canal Walk parking lot, same spot as earlier in the day, and phoned 'Daniel' to ask him where she (the jeweller) was.  He answered the call (14h29) and said I should wait for her. I put the phone down and minutes later, I tried calling him again but it just rang.  It was at this point that I realised that I'd been scammed! I have never felt this stupid in my life.  Reading this story makes it even worse! They have been so good and convincing that I did not once think that all these people know each other.  This must be the worst feeling ever, knowing that you've been take for a did i not see this coming?????????

SAPS are USELESS!!! These guys tried to scam me years ago while I was selling a Porsche Cayenne on Gumtree. I went to SAPS, supplied them with 4 Cell Numbers, but they didn't even try to do anything, despite me offering to help set them up and catch them in a Sting Operation. Although the SAPS have been given the same numbers so many times, the scammers still operate using the exact same numbers, as the SAPS and Hawks refuse to do anything to protect us Tax Paying Citizens who bring them as much info and details as possible. Thanks SAPS, your Brilliant Work just got proven again, when I was once again contacted by Robert via the same number reported to SAPS many, many times. 073 190 7823! You have been given the number on numerous occasions and by so many different people, yet you never trace it or any of the others. If you did, you would have caught these scammers by now, as they are so casual, knowing you will do nothing. Luckily I am vigilant and aware of their scams, so told them that I have already given the number over to SAPS and they are tracing it.... But let's be honest, they never do, because it would actually mean that they would actually have to do the job that they were employed to do. That is probably asking too much from government employees, especially as it is from us who pay taxes and ensuring that they continue to receive their salaries!

Hi same thing happend to me a very convincing man named David who apparently works as a Truck driver from Namibia. He convinced me to meet him at KFC in vanderbijlpark. And from there we would go to a bank of my choice to make a direct payment for the car which then he would collect in 2 weeks time. David then stated that he needs to collect the money from a frind when we arrived this Muslim looking man got in the car , he then pulled out R350000 along with a small clear packet with Dimond in. He then gave the Dimond back and said he will have full payment of 1.2 million in 20 min which we agreed to wait . After the man left David convinced me to take him to the dealer. a short while after rival they broke into argument which lead to the dealer taking back the Diamonds . The dealer then said he would only give the Dimond back if we left a R40 deposit as a sign of trust. David then proceeded to beg me for some cash so the deal does not fall through . At this point I was highly suspicious and frustrated eager to leave I told David that il go home and collect the cash and be back in 30 minutes I then made a quick getaway a never looked back.
Here is his numbers he used : 0605659828 ; 0632761097 as well as 0786147603

After reading some of these reports I'm glad I got out with nothing taken

  • Robs108584 21 Jun 2017, 01:21 PM

Same thing has happened to me. Just got a call asking for my car and to meet a guy named Alvin who has driven a truck from Namibia and I must meet him in Vanderbijlpark by a pick n pay hyper. (0836648416) He spoke Afrikaans and I said I don't understand so he spoke English. He is getting the car for his friend Armand (0838832316), who only wants the car in two weeks because he is in PE. I am supposed to meet Alvin tomorrow at 8:30am. No way in hell am I going.

  • HendrickRamaala21 15 Jun 2017, 12:06 PM

He is about 5'10" and has a dark complection with a slight beard. His story always remains the same, he just changes his name. He is a Wambo from Namibia and claims he can only speak Afrikaans.

  • CrazyJack 8 Jun 2017, 04:56 PM

Can you identify this man.. because I think I have found him

  • Bruce107366 26 May 2017, 06:02 PM

So I posted my car for sale yesterday and within an hour I had a call from the afrikaans speaking "David" from Namibia who is here in Vanderbijlpark on business and wants to buy my car for cash for his dear wife back home. It seemed like a good idea so I told him I will meet him at the bank at 11 am. Luckily I kept thinking about this all evening and this morning I told him I need to do it another day as I really cant get away from the office. So after finding all your posts I am now in the position where I have yet to meet this crook (or not). What should I do? How do you report a crime that hasn't yet happened and will the police even bother with this? Oh and if anyone is looking for a very nice Hyundai i30 1.6 Premium its still available :-)

  • iec1 22 May 2017, 09:03 AM

I just googled this scam and joined this group. My husband was scammed yesterday by a guy, talking Afrikaans. We are agents for a certain company selling commodities. He is a truck driver from Namibia, working for De Beers etc in South Africa currently. Our terms are upfront payment and then delivery.Organised a meeting in NWest. he said that after signature of contract the can go to bank to deposit. Once there lots of stories and my husband left. On his way back he was followed by a car. Stopped just after tollgate and the car stopped as well. We told they are SAPS and need to search.Made him complete a form with address, name id etc. About 10 minutes later the buyer called telling him that everything is in order and they must meet as garage in Jhb close to Golden Highway. Husband waited in car and someone opened the door, pointed gun at him telling him to move over. They drove into location and forced him into house.Long story after that, Planted diamonds and Police stormed in.They demanded R50 000, we settled on less. Husband safe but we are all so traumatised. George phoned us. Numbers used +264 81 637 0802 and 063 381 9917 and 073 645 2887

Username 7642, don't feel bad! I was taken for a large sum of money with exactly the same scam. I still think about the events of that day and it sends shivers down my spine. I often remind myself that the money I lost is proof that if you associate yourself with criminals bad things will happen to you. I have a picture of this guy and would like to share it. However don't know how to post it on this site? Anyone that wants a picture to confirm the culprit post your email and I will send it on! Thanks for all the comments, I take comfort in the fact that I wasn't the only fool!

  • AlmostScammed 20 Feb 2017, 07:46 PM

I also feel so stupid. Daniel and Pablo must pay back all my money.

  • Zorro 25 Jul 2016, 10:01 AM

Hi guys, be on the lookout for these as they are still operating in Port Elizabeth. Posted my vehicle on gumtree for sale and received a phone call from a John (078 410 2470) an afrikaans speaking guy with an accent indicating he might be non-white. He was very keen on purchasing the vehicle but informed me that he was a truck driver and only visit PE every two weeks or so. After two attempts of him failing to come view the vehicle whilst he was in PE, he wanted me to bring the car to him which raised my first suspicion. Then I was informed on friday that he could not come to PE to come view the vehicle as arranged, but he will get his business partner to phone me who are currently in PE to pay for the vehicle without him even seeing the car, second red flag raised in my mind.
I then received a phone call from Ronnie (082 083 5331), another afrikaans speaking guy with accent who claimed to be John's business partner arranging with me to meet at bank for a cash deposit into my account. When asking him whether he would have that much cash on him to make a deposit, he quickly changed the conversation telling me that we must not discuss over phone but we can sort out at bank. I then received a phone call from Ronnie stating that he has no transport and whether I could not come fetch him the Saturday morning in an industrial area of PE (Deal Party) and give him a lift to the bank to deposit the money. This raised a serious red flag and I informed him that I couldn't give him a lift as I was busy and that if they were serious about purchasing the vehicle they would make a plan to pay the money into my account. Later on I received a phone call asking for my banking details as he were going to make an electronic transfer into my account. Banking details were given and he said he will let me know when transfer has been done, just to get a phone call later stating that his wife has made the transfer from a bank in (Suid-Wes) into his account and that he has run out of airtime to check if the funds have cleared in his bank and whether I couldn't buy him some airtime. I told him that I won't buy him airtime and when I asked him why his wife did not transfer the money directly into my account he told me that you can't transfer money from a Bank in Suid-Wes to an SA bank directly. When I questioned him about that statement and asked him then how the money was going to clear in his account he avoided the question as I told him that was utter nonsense and that I am not stupid. The call was then cut off and I have not heard from then since. Please be on the lookout for these guys, I am not sure as to how they are trying to scam guys, whether it be just to get some cash from you or even something more serious as to lure you out to a remote area and possibly even rob you. Don't get caught!

  • carowner 23 Jun 2016, 11:14 AM

Thank goodness I found this site! We were meant to meet "John Thomas" in Port Elizabeth today after he responded to our car advert on Gumtree! He told us he is based in Cape Town, works for De Beers and that his wife told him about the advert. My husband says John claims to be Afrikaans but that he has an accent. We have not received a response to an SMS asking for his ID number. The cell number he is using is 0638093562.

  • bisschzs 9 Jun 2016, 10:00 PM

Tonight it was my turn. Advertised online and got exactly the same same story. This time the cell number used was 0814133751. He is apparantly staying tonight in Klerksdorp and departing tomorrow to Angola as a truck driver. Wanted me to drive300km to Klerksdorp tomorrow morning for him to "see" the vehicle. He would pay the cash in my bank account and I need to keep the vehicle for 2 weeks until he has the time to take leave and fly down to come and collect.........bla,bla,bla. I refused to drive to Klerksdorp. He would phone tomorrow to make alternative arrangements. Thank God for online confirmation of suspicious conduct.

  • zaan1803 3 Jun 2016, 06:21 PM

    Hi guys!
Same thing happened to me today in PE. Had my bakkie advertised on Gumtree. "Sakkie" called me. Said that he was a driver from "Suid Wes " working for the mines. Stayed at Algoa guest house and he wanted to buy the bakkie, but only take it after the weekend, he was on his way to East London. Met him at Checkers opposite Makro. He liked the bakkie immediately and said that he would buy it, without even getting in the car. I asked him if he wanted to take it for a drive. As we got in, I asked him if he carried a gun, feeling a bit concerned. He lifted his shirt and showed me that he didn't carry. He spoke Afrikaans, but looked Nigerian/Angolan. As we took off he said that he needed to get airtime and then we could go and pick up the money from some lady. The first thought through my mind was that this could end up in a highjacking. I told him that I had another appointment and no time to drive around now. Dropped him off at Checkers and said I would call him when I am in town. I then tried to make arrangements for him to meet me with the money in the bank. He made up excuses and asked if I could come and pick him up first. He said that he would call me when he was in town. Never called again. Glory to God for the spirit of decernment. Checked with both Algoa guesthouses in PE, they didn't have someone of that description there. Googled this site for scams and was quite surprised. Used numbers 0820835331 and later 0634293398. Any suggestions on how we could stop them ?Any law enforcement SAPS on this site ?

  • Colin97603 1 Jun 2016, 05:27 PM

Hi guys, i buy and sell vehicles in PE and have been through the same story, the " Daniel " then " John" still calls on most vehicles i advertise.I was lucky to bail ou in th middle o the episode. I have had a call from him in the past 3 days so he is definately still active in the area, he likes to meet up at the Mc Donalds in summerstrand.Would love to get involved with the Police and catch the scamster, what do you uy suggest ? does ayone have reliable contacts in the Police that would assist ?? We can also stand together and sort im out on our own............oooh that would be awsome...he has one lazy eye, would like to make both his eyes look the same !!

  • GPROTECT 1 Jun 2016, 09:57 AM

Seriously; these scammers are still at work in PE. They reply to all vehicle adverts and because theres no actual crime committed the police cant do anything about it. On which platform can we make the public aware??????

  • GPROTECT 30 May 2016, 04:52 PM

Well, something similar almost happened to us in Port Elizabeth. We had "Sakkie" in our car and when I refused to handle cash he quietly disappeared around the corner.. Where can one post a photo of these criminals. Trust your queezy feeling... I believe God protected us from this

  • Banshee 27 May 2016, 09:56 AM

Hi everyone. This happened to me last night. Luckily I have true caller on my phone. The number "sakkie" phoned from was 0630236529, but truecaller brought it up as "skelm ka***r". I then Googled the number and came across this website. Same story. Truck driver from Kimberley and wants to meet in Pe to see my bakkie as advertised on Gumtree. Thank you everyone for posting their different Cell numbers. I have saved them all on my phone as "Gumtree Scammer" and also updated truecaller.

  • buddy28 16 Mar 2016, 11:16 AM

Hi everyone. Just an update that these guys are still active and operating out of Vereeniging. Mostly the same story. One guy phones from "Namibia" on number 0733653727, and his "truck driver" from 0736996064. Two week pick up story, meet at bank for money transfer etc. Not sure if I should meet them and involve the poilce or if I should I rather just avoid a meet-up and sms crimeline as well with the info?

  • MarO 23 Jan 2016, 10:52 AM

This happened to me this morning. We advertised our vehicle and a guy by the name of Daniel (Afrikaans speaking) called me. He told me that he is a truck driver from Springbok and that we must meet him at Grootte Schuur hospital as he is visiting his child there. Also the same story about not being able to take the car immediatly and that he will fetch the car at a later stage. I immediatly smelled a rat as he wasn't prepared to meet me at my house and I started googling just to find all these similar stories. He is still waiting at Grootte Schuur to meet us - I wish I could sent the police there instead.

We placed an ad in Gumtree to sell a vehicle. A black man called Jason (076 635 1313) contacted us. Same old, same old, an Afrikaans speaking truck driver from Namibia that wanted to buy our vehicle for cash. He wanted to meet me at McDonalds in Rustenburg... As I was about to leave for Rustenburg this morning, my wife called me with the news that was a scam (she thankfully picked it up from all your posts). Keep reporting!!

    Hi Guys

This just happened to me, I received a call from Andreas, who is currently in Namibia (073 834 3905) and his driver James ( 083 520 4091) who would pay me cash for my vehicle in a random meeting place tomorrow. Andreas also requested that the vehicle stays with me for two weeks and then he would come and fetch it. Since this is not the first time I have have been approached by a scammer, I immediately googled their names and scenarios which brought me here. So keep posting guys and lets hope their days are numbered.

This just happened to me tonight.I put an ad on gumtree a few days ago for my car. I received a call from Patrick on 0793980462.He also said that he was in namibia and that his friend, who's a truck driver would come pay me the cash tomorrow and that he would then fetch the car himself in two weeks time. He said I must go to the police station with his friend to sign an affidavit. He asked me what work i do as he needed to be able to trust me. I told him that I'm a lawyer and he said he'd get back to me. Fortunately I doubt he will :) but still I feel violated!

I just had the guy call me about my bakkie I put on Gumtree. Wanted to speak Afrikaans, driving from South West, meet in PE, go to the bank to pay in the money, etc. He gave his name as Ronnie and his number as 0630236529. I phoned him back and spoke to him and set up the meeting. Then checked this site and phoned back to say I know it is a scam and the call suddenly ended. Careful out there. These people are terrible.

  • jethro2 26 Jun 2015, 02:21 PM

Just met the same crew in PE. John, Pablo and Linda or something like that. I refused to give them any money and it ended with John saying he would contact once he had made his own arrangement to finish off the diamond deal. I don't expect to hear from him!

John just called me about my car. John, from De Beers, car is for his wife. Truck driver. Blah blah. Very well spoken afrikaans black guy. Willing to pay cash up front, then fetch the car 2 weeks later. 0603178579 Glad I find this website. If it sounds to good to be true, it's too go be true.

  • Grant12 10 Jun 2015, 09:04 AM

I received a call yesterday from a "Romeo" who had exactly the same story. Everything seemed very suspicious and this feedback reinforced my views that it was a scam. Thank you.

    Fucking [Removed]!!

  • sebation 5 Jun 2015, 02:40 PM

Same story about, John called me, being a truck driver, First thing he asked if it was private or dealer. Once i said private he said his wife told him about the car. I said that i would meet him the next day but i will need his full name and ID number to draw up the contract. He gave an 11 digit number which is same for Namibia. His name was John Shelongo his phone number is 0603178579 and street address in Windhoek. I told him i will also need his passport. In the meantime i used my contacts in Namibia who confirmed his name and ID was fake, i told him i do not have time to meet him, he came back to say he is buying another car. I was thinking to report this to police but seeing it is an old ongoing story i would not bother

  • Cobus6 4 Jun 2015, 02:40 PM

Same scenario with so-called Namibian truck driver working for De Beers Diamonds wanting to buy a car for his wife. He was going to pay cash and we had to meet him in Culemborg, Cape Town. Fortunately we came across this website that warned us in time. The number he used is 0603178579

  • Grant13 22 May 2015, 09:34 PM

These guys are still at I in Vereeniging. I had Thomas phone me with the same story about being a Namibian truck driver and I must keep the car for two weeks for him. Thanks guys for this website that save me all the trouble. Didn't meet with this guy yet after becoming suspicious and googling which lead me to this site. Thanks again to all the honest people out there warning against these buggers!

  • preshalan 19 Apr 2015, 06:17 PM

haha his name is now norman. he called me now and he sayd he cnt come view the car i must keep it for him. he will pay me tomorrow. im selling cars for a while now. so it seemed fishy i put his number into google and came up to this page. he called back to ask if i can bring the car to him. i asked him how much for the fake diamonds. and he says what am i talking about. i told him his a scam artist. he should google his number. he then told me he only got the number today.i told him to get lost and have a nice day.

  • Shaun Dyers 18 Apr 2015, 05:47 AM

The same scenario described by Toni dated 24 February unfolded yesterday. The same names were implicated and the situation was pretty much the same.I have been duped into drawing R5000 and the sale of my vehicle was remotely insignificant as the alleged sale of diamonds became the real deal. These guys are so crafty and convining that I didn't even realise that I was being conned. They took my cellphone as well and I just want to warn other gumtree/Olyx users to be weary of any Namibian offering to buy a vehicle from them.In retrospect I consider myself lucky because if I wasn't co-operative who knows how things would have panned out.

  • Anton16 13 Apr 2015, 08:03 PM

  • Toni 24 Feb 2015, 02:23 PM

Hi there, This is happening to us right now! Call from Namibia (Rundie - African Afrikaans Male) on Saturday regarding our Land Rover for Sale, said his friend (Thomas - also African Afrikaans Male) is driving a truck down to Cape Town and could we please take him to the bank todo the transfer and police station for affadavit. Also could we please keep the Landy for 3 weeks until he came down to collect it. Picked "said friend" up this morning and 3 hours later with 2 Angolans and an Indian guy and "diamonds", my husband is R2,000 out of pocket as the only thing he could do to get rid of the Angolans was to book them into a hotel in Cape Town. They wanted him to give R10,000 with the said friend as collateral to take them to the "buyers". Said they would give my husband a cut of the R400K if he did. Hubbie knew this was a scam so had to think quick. He left them there and went back to the office where he phoned "Rundie" to say this was not on and that he was out of pocket R2,000. "Rundie" apologised and said that his wife would do the EFT straight away. Strange thing is, he is still carrying on the scam and has just phoned Hubbie to confirm that his wife is on the way to the bank be continued.......
